Mill Spring Monday: Pure Country Weavers

There's a textile mill on Highway 108 in Mill Spring that's been quietly making some of the finest woven blankets in America for 37 years. And unless you work there or know someone who does, you might not even know it exists.

Pure Country Weavers has been operating in Mill Spring since 1988, back when American textile manufacturing was already becoming rare. Today, they're one of the last great American textile mills still standing — and they're not just surviving. They're thriving.

The Story

Founded by Jay Clark, Pure Country started with a simple mission: make quality woven textiles that last a lifetime, at prices people can actually afford. Nearly four decades later, that mission hasn't changed.

What has changed is the scale. Pure Country now employs about 50 people at their Mill Spring facility and generates over $21 million in annual revenue. They've become the largest manufacturer of woven textile products in the country — blanket throws, afghans, wall tapestries, tote bags, and pillows.

But they haven't sacrificed quality for growth. Every single product is still made by hand, right here in North Carolina.

How It's Made

Here's what makes Pure Country different: their blankets are woven, not printed.

Each blanket contains over 8 miles of 100% cotton thread, intricately woven on state-of-the-art jacquard looms. The design isn't stamped on or screen-printed — it's built into the fabric itself, thread by thread.

The result is a blanket with rich texture, depth, and durability that you can't get from printed alternatives. These are heirloom-quality pieces that get softer with every wash and last for generations.

And every blanket is hand-finished and inspected by three different craftspeople before it ships. Quality control isn't outsourced. It's personal.

The Range

Pure Country offers over 3,000 designs. Military branches, wildlife, coastal scenes, religious themes, sports teams, seasonal décor, custom family photos, corporate logos, pet portraits — the selection is staggering.

They work with artists and licensed properties to create unique designs. They do custom work for fundraisers, corporate gifts, and memorial tributes. If you can imagine it, they can weave it.

Their blankets show up everywhere — Costco, Amazon, hospital gift shops, funeral homes, corporate offices. Chances are, you've seen their work without realizing it was made right here in Mill Spring.

Why It Matters

When a textile mill shuts down, those jobs don't come back. American textile manufacturing has been decimated over the past few decades, with most production moving overseas.

Pure Country Weavers is one of the holdouts. They've kept 50 people employed in Mill Spring for nearly four decades. They've proven that American-made can compete on quality, price, and scale.

When you buy from Pure Country, you're not just buying a blanket. You're supporting local jobs, American craftsmanship, and a family-owned business that chose to stay here when it would have been easier to leave.
