I Took a Tour of My Own County and Learned Things I Didn't Know

Last Sunday I did something I don't usually do. I let someone else drive. I let someone else hold the map and decide where we were going next. And it turned out to be exactly what I needed.

I went on a tour with Carolina Foothills Tours — a brand new local tour company — and even though it rained the entire time, it was genuinely one of the best things I've done since moving here.

Three Friends, One Love Letter to Polk County

Carolina Foothills Tours was founded in 2026 by Sharon, Brian, and Zach — three friends who love this place enough to build a business around showing it off. Their about page describes the company as a love letter to the place they call home, and honestly, after spending an afternoon with them, I believe every word of it.

They keep their tours small and personal on purpose. No crowded buses. No scripted speeches. Just genuine local knowledge from people who have built their actual lives in these foothills.

I Thought I Knew This Place

Here's the thing that actually surprised me: I've lived in Polk County for two years. I've driven through Tryon and Saluda more times than I can count. And I still learned things about this area I had no idea about.

That's the value of having someone else lead. When you're not the one navigating, you actually notice things. You hear the stories. You stop treating familiar roads as just a way to get somewhere and start seeing them as a place with an actual history.

It made me think about how easy it is to stop being curious about the place you live once it becomes routine. A good tour guide breaks that. Sharon, Brian, and Zach broke that for me.

The Real Proof: My Friend From Boston

I had a friend visiting from Boston for eight days. She did the full Western North Carolina circuit — waterfalls, Asheville, the whole thing. When I asked her afterward what her favorite parts of the trip were, the Carolina Foothills Tour came in at number two. Out of eight days. In the rain.

That's not a small thing. That's a tour company doing something right.

What They Offer

Carolina Foothills Tours runs a handful of different experiences, all rooted in real local history and the area's wine country status — the Tryon foothills were officially recognized as an American Viticultural Area in 2025.

It's Wine O'Clock takes you through two or three local wineries, with a charcuterie board and a keepsake wine glass included. Starting at $90 per person, 21 and up.

Tryon Tales Tour digs into the area's hidden history — including Nina Simone's early career and Eleanor Roosevelt's historic visits to the area. Starting at $25 per person.

Saluda Rail Adventures starts at Iron Key Brewing — housed in a former prison where the original solitary confinement cells still stand — then heads up the historic rail grade to the Saluda Depot Museum and a preserved boarding house, ending with time to wander downtown Saluda. Starting at $40 per person.

Custom Tours are built around whatever you want — a brewery day, a lake day, a downtown shopping day. Rates are negotiable.

Why I'm Telling You This

I don't usually go out of my way to recommend something I've only experienced once. But this one earned it — partly because Sharon, Brian, and Zach are clearly building something with real care, and partly because of what it did for me personally.

If you have visitors coming this summer, book this. If you've lived here for years and have stopped noticing the place, book this too. Sometimes you need someone else to drive for a while to remember why you love where you live.
